GENERAL TESTING INFORMATION

TEST APPROVAL AND THE AVAILABLITY OF THE STANFORD 9
Don't be confused! School divisions mail testing reminders to homeschoolers who have sent in a Notice of Intent. Some superintendents may offer to provide Stanford 9 testing, and some may ask which test you intend to use.

The law DOES NOT require prior approval or notification of your method of testing or evaluation. However, if you plan to test with the public schools, you will want to respond to the superintendent's letter for scheduling purposes. If a test is offered by the local school division, it will be the Stanford 9. The test will be free, and the results will be sent directly to the school division, then to you.

Be aware that there has been a change in the availability of testing: not all school districts may offer testing to homeschoolers. In an attempt to reduce the number of tests for Virginia public-school students, the requirement to administer the Stanford 9 has been lifted for school divisions administering another assessment--such as the SOL test--in the same year. School systems can still offer the Stanford 9 to homeschoolers if they like, or if they have them available.

TESTING/EVALUATION OPTIONS
Remember, the law allows several forms of evaluation. You may test at a public school if the test is available; choose a standardized achievement test and have it privately administered; have an independent evaluation; or submit a portfolio. Depending on the test, you may either administer it yourself or hire a test administrator; check with the test provider for restrictions.

DO KINDERGARTNERS HAVE TO BE TESTED?
Children who are NOT six by September 30 of the school year do not have to be tested; age, not grade level is the determining factor. "The [testing] requirements of subsection (C) shall not apply to children who are under the age of six as of September 30 of the school year" § 22.1-254.1 (C). Therefore, a five-year-old kindergarten student will not have to be tested; however, a six-year-old kindergarten student will have to be tested if his birthday is before September 30.

WHEN TO SEND IN YOUR RESULTS
The results of your child's evaluation or assessment, or his portfolio, must be sent to the division superintendent by AUGUST 1 of each year.

See? Testing won't be so bad. Gather your information, move ahead, and put the dreaded {{{Test Anxiety}}} behind you.
